April Fool’s Baby
It was on April first last year that I played the biggest April Fool’s joke ever — by telling the truth. I was pregnant, and my due date, as determined by the doctor I visited in Hong Kong, was April 1st. Almost as soon as the doctor told us, I decided to wait and not reveal my pregnancy until either the baby or April Fool’s Day arrived.
Accordingly, on April 1st, I made my general announcement on Facebook. I’m pregnant!!!! Multiple exclamation points and lack of photos enhanced the ambiguity. Since most of my friends live in different countries and hadn’t seen me in a number of months, they really weren’t sure whether to congratulate me or berate me for playing such a childish prank. My online announcement produced comments such as: Congratulations? and I’m so happy for you! Wait, is this a joke? and You can’t fool me!
Sweet Baby was born a few days later, and posting a photo of us in the delivery room cleared up the truth. Or, as my friend Janna put it, “Wow, you’re really dedicated to this prank.”
Happy birthday, to the world’s most gorgeous little one! It’s not always easy (*cough* sleep issues *cough*), but there hasn’t been a single day goes by that I don’t consider myself the luckiest person ever to have him as my child.
